Iris Ministries' Harvest School is a hands-on, in-the-dirt evangelistic missions training school in Pemba, Mozambique with a focus on the practical, the Spirit filled and Spirit led.
Our whole purpose can be summed up in one word. Love. It is a small four-letter word that will cost you everything. Love will make you passionate with purpose and let you experience deep compassion for others. Love will let you give to others without expecting anything in return. Love will cause you to completely lay down your life for the sake of the person in front of you. Jesus came with ceaseless love for both the one and the masses and now we must do the same.
The harvest is ripe and God is calling forth a new generation of laid-down lovers who will run into the darkest corners of the earth, call in the outcasts, bring in His Bride and invite the poor to come to the wedding feast. We are all called to carry His glory to the nations!
We are inviting all those who have a clear call to missions to be trained up and sent out into the waiting world. All giftings are welcome including construction supervisors that can train others, maintenance, administrators, health care professionals, hospitality admin, Bible school teachers and oversight admin, elementary school supervision, financial bookkeeping and admin, mechanical including well drilling technology, vehicle oversight and repair, and micro-enterprise developers.
Matthew 9:36-38: Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."
The school has a warm atmosphere and a real sense of camaraderie. The size of the student body generally varies between 85 and 125, where it's easy to know all your classmates at some level and you really do end up feeling like family.
Learning from, loving and living with the poor creates an over all air of humility, gratitude and honor that spreads through the whole school. Sharing the Father's heart with those who have no parents of their own is one of the greatest blessings.
Sharing the Father's heart with those who have no parents of their own is one of the greatest blessings.
Overnight evangelistic outreaches in local bush areas are always electric with excitement . On almost every outreach, many who have never heard the name of Jesus are saved, many miracles happen and beyond that, camping out in the african bush-bush is always an amazing experience!
There is really nothing quite like living with a company of wholly abandoned and whole-hearted lovers of God. It is simply wonderful!
As a student you will live in a small house with 6-8 housemates. Learning to live and work together as family in close quarters as part of an international community is as important a part of the school experience as the classes.
The student houses have toilets, a sink, a refrigerator and a stove. Even though we have all these things, many times the water or power goes out for many days, so be prepared. We consider this the "shallow end" of getting practically equipped for the physical challenges of third-world nations.
Though the school will keep you busy, after hours there is still time for extracurricular activities. Making friends. Worshiping together. Praying together. Playing together. Experiencing village shopping. Taking an Iris child to the "chicken shack" for a bite to eat. Swimming in the beautiful Indian ocean. Just relaxing with the Lord for a few minutes while enjoying a classic Pemba sunset.
The academic instruction at Harvest School is different from most schools because it is part hands-on and part in class instruction. Much of what you will learn will be with 'practical missions', laid on the foundation of the teaching you have received while in the "classroom"
What you experience hands on will vary widely. It may be anything that is a possible expression of the Father's love. Praying for the sick in a hospital, holding a baby, cleaning in the big base kitchen, playing soccer with children on the base, re-roofing the houses of widows in the village or prophesying on a bush outreach.
Everyone's hands on experience will be a bit different and you will definitely get out of it what you put into it. That is to say, if you're seeking opportunities to minister in the love of Christ, there will be no shortage of opportunities, both great and small.
What you learn in the classroom will be varied across the course of the Harvest School term. One day missionaries may teach how to minister cross-culturally, another day an apostle in the faith teach how to establish a kingdom culture wherever you may be, on another prophets may be teaching how to prophesy, followed by Spirit led worship. It really is a bit different every time.
We are very blessed to have many apostles, prophets, evangelists and teachers come every year to encourage us with their testimonies, share their wisdom and impart their giftings to the next generation.
Immediately following school there are many opportunities to go on "extended outreaches" that may be in Mozambique or ohter nations. Be sure to check what outreaches are available during the term you intend to apply to.
